CAN YOU UNDERSTAND
by DKZ

Are our worlds really so different
Can our minds be miles apart
Do we live in complete confusion
Is it really games without heart

Do you understand the fear I feel
The hatred that is hidden inside of me
              The ambivalence and the pain
The past that just had to be

Can you understand my phone calls
My need for someone to understand
The necessity to think and talk
To attempt to make the confusion end

Do you know why I need to belong
              In a world where I don't feel a part
              Do you understand the aloneness
Of which connection has no part

Do you really see how I exist in life
Not for myself or for others who care
But to prove myself and my existence
To show that I really don't care

Can you see why I needed to escape
The disaster that seemed to follow me
To dissociate was to not remember or feel
And therefore to continue to be

Do you know what it's like to fail
From the moment conceived into life
              How dreams can become nightmares
And life a war zone almost overnight

Can you understand why I can't trust
And believe in people who claim to care
Do you understand my need to
My past that says I don't dare

Can you understand the superficial talk
The defenses that for survival have to be
The need to be and feel completely real
The fears that say it can't be my reality

Can you see there is no single identity for me
When the individual "I" gets lost in "We"
The need to function in a world
              Where others only understand "Me"

              My friends I'll tell you
You mean a lot to me
You time, your words, your patience
Often help me see a reason to be

Cries for help often go unheard
As we talk about the sun
              Desperation really means
That it seems the battle can't be won

Existence goes on day after day
As life continues to march on by
The desire to shoot for a star
The inability to see the sky

For time has a way of changing
The people we once used to be
              Truths often turn into lies
As in time the reality we see

So when the question comes to why
Maybe I should just simply say
That if there's an answer to all this
I guess that it's just that way
